What is GeoPose, and why is it important for developers?

Details: As virtual and augmented reality become increasingly popular, more and more opportunities are popping up for software developers, companies, and consumers alike. Last month, we discussed the power of standardized protocols, such as GeoPose, where a digital object’s precise position and orientation are encoded to a physical location. This month, our location-based Augmented Reality superstar, Stephen Black, is back with a panel of experts who will share with us the technical and economic advantages of GeoPose, as well as how GeoPose represents an open and ethical future for the spatial web, the computing atmosphere that exists in a 3D space.

Agenda:

  1. What is GeoPose, why is it important for the future of AR?

  2. How is the technology being built behind the scenes?

  3. How does one enter into the location-based AR industry as a technical professional?

  4. Which industries are moving most rapidly towards taking up GeoPose/ Location-based AR?

  5. What are the most exciting opportunities for this tech on the horizon?

Speakers:

  • Stephen Black: With a background as an artist, writer, and producer for network television, he began researching Augmented Reality in 2015. Since that time he has spoken about AR worldwide, including MIT and the VIEW Conference. With Sayuri Okayama, he created Bubiko Food tour to explore the intersections of AR, food, and pop culture. His short film "Bubiko: First Flight," created at the Augmented.City AR testbed in Bari, Italy, has been called "as historically significant as the first website on the internet."

  • Julia Beabout: CEO and Creative Director of Novaby, an award-winning 3D/AR Studio specializing in Augmented Reality (AR) Placemaking, space activations, and tours. She and her team of artists, storytellers, and creative technologists love transforming spaces into places using AR, the arts, humanities, and social science. Their landmark projects can be found in Seattle, New York, San Francisco, Richmond, and Europe. She has 25+ years of experience leading clients and organizations through highly technical and creative projects up to $200 million in the virtual and real world. As a respected leader in AR Placemaking, she has spoken on the subject at the MIT Media Lab, the U.S. State Department, the Architects Institute of America, the University of Washington, the VRAR Association, and the National Consortium for Creative Placemaking.

  • Christine Perey: Industry analyst, researcher, and advocate for interoperable Augmented Reality. From 2009-2016, she led the grassroots community dedicated to this purpose. She is on numerous boards, is a member of many standards groups, and co-chairs the IEEE SA ARLEM WG and the OGC GeoPose SWG. She is the founder of the AR for Enterprise Alliance (AREA), chairs the Research Committee, and leads the AREA Interoperability and Standards Program. Since 2018, she is a founder of the Open AR Cloud (OARC) association and serves on the governing board. She co-chairs the OARC Reality Capture, Indexing, Mapping, and GeoPose Working Group.

  • Steve Smyth: Director of MobileGIS Ltd. where he focuses on converting images to semantic models for military simulations, utility companies, urban planners, and other large infrastructure projects. He has contributed to and led many international standardization activities. Currently, Steve is co-chair of the OGC CItyGML Standards Working Group and editor and architect of the OGC GeoPose draft specification.
